Upper-bound Performance of a Wideband Burst-by-burst Adaptive Modem

چکیده
In this contribution, adaptive modulation is applied in conjunction with a Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) in order to mitigate the eeects of the slowly varying wideband multi-path Rayleigh fading channel. An upper-bound mean BER and Bits Per Symbol (BPS) performance is introduced for this scheme by utilizing the pseudo-SNR at the output of the DFE in order to switch the modulation schemes on a burst-by-burst basis. The performance is then optimized using the Powell Multi-dimensional line minimization technique for speech and data transmission. Consequently, the performance of each individual modulation schemes and the amalgamated adaptive scheme were compared in terms of nor-malised channel capacity. The results indicate gains of approximately 1?3dB and 7?9dB, for speech and data transmission, respectively using the proposed burst-by-burst adaptive wideband scheme.

The upper-bound performance of radial basis function decision feedback equalised (RBF DFE) burst-by-burst adaptive modulation is presented for tranmissions over dispersive wideband mobile channels. The RBF DFE is capable of estimating the 'short term bit error rate' of the received data burst and this estimate is used as the modem mode switching criterion in order to switch between di erent mod...

A low bit-rate video coding techniques using the H.26L standard codec for robust transmission in mobile multimedia environments are presented. For the sake of achieving error resilience, the source codec has to make provisions for error detection, resynchronization and error concealment. Thus a packetization technique invoking adaptive bit-rate control was used in conjuction with the various mo...

The design tradeoffs of turbo-coded burst-by-burst adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) wideband transceivers are analyzed. We demonstrate that upon aiming for a higher throughput a higher proportion of low-quality OFDM subcarriers has to be used for the transmission of inherently vulnerable high-order modem modes, transmitting several bits per subcarrier. Upon invoking turbo...
